ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the in vitro inhibitory effects of resveratrol on rabies virus. Methods:The challenge virus standard (CVS)-11 strain of rabies virus and BHK-21 cells were used to establish the infection model. In vitro inhibitory effects of resveratrol on rabies virus were analyzed at different stages of infection by direct immunofluorescence and cell fluorescence focus unit assay. Results:Without affecting cell growth, resveratrol could block the adsorption of virus, interfere with the entry of virus into cells and inhibit virus proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner. The inhibition rate could reach up to about 95%. The results of co-incubation experiment showed that 40 μmol/L resveratrol could directly kill the virus. Conclusions:This study indicated that resveratrol inhibited the activity of rabies virus in a concentration-dependent manner.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the inactivating effect of soap solution on rabies virus and to explore the concentration of soap solutions which could be effective in post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) of rabies virus infection.@*Methods@#The BSR and N2a cells were respectively infected by the mixture of different concentrations of soap solution and rabies virus CVS-11. Based on the direct immunofluorescent method (DFA) and reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR), the inactivating effects of soap solutions on rabies viruse in BSR and N2a cells were detected, respectively.@*Results@#This experiment established the BSR or N2a cells model in 24 well cell culture plates, and we found that the upper limit of soap solution concentration which BSR or N2a cells could tolerate was 1%. The inhibitory effect test of different soap solution on rabies virus showed that the 0.5% concentration of soap solution could completely inhibit the survival of CVS-11 strain in both the BSR and N2a cells, but the 0.1% concentration of soap solution could not inhibit the rabies viruses completely.@*Conclusions@#The 0.5%-1% concentration of soap solutions could inhibit the survival of CVS-11 strain in three minutes in vivo experiment.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of postnatal music exposure on fearful behavior of prenatal stressed rats in defensive withdrawal test and the expression of gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR) in the amygdala. Methods Wistar pregnant rats were divid-ed in stress group (n=8) and control group (n=8). The stress group were immobilized and bright lighted 45 min, 3 times a day, when gesta-tion 11-20 days, while the control group without any stress. The new born rats from the stress group were exposed in music (SM group) or white noise (SW group) for 45 min twice a day since 1 day after born, and the rats from the control (SC) group left undisturbed. They were tested with defensive withdrawal test 60 days after birth, and the GRPR levels in the amygdala were measured with immunofluorescence and real-time PCR. Results The latency was shorter and the frequence out of the chamber was the most in the SM group of the defensive withdrawal test (P<0.001), while GRPR-positive cells and GRPR mRNA increased in amygdala (P<0.001). Conclusion Postnatal music ex-posure can counteract the abnormal behavior response of prenatal stressed offspring and accompany with increased expression of GRPR in the amygdala.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDThe causes and mechanisms of chronic diarrhea are complex. This study aimed to explore the relationship between chronic diarrhea with normal colonoscopy findings and terminal ileum lesions.

METHODSAll cases were collected from January 2009 to June 2010. The 40 patients in the patient group had chronic diarrhea with normal colonoscopy findings. Those who had hyperthyroidism, diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, cirrhosis, atrophic gastritis, short bowel syndrome and connective tissue diseases had been excluded. The control group contained 40 healthy individuals without diarrhea. Endoscopy of the terminal ileum was applied in both groups, with the endoscope inserted into terminal ileum for more than 20 cm. The patients diagnosed of chronic diarrhea with terminal ileum lesions were treated with metronidazole and probiotics for 10-14 days.

RESULTSBefore treatment there were significant differences in endoscopy findings of the terminal ileum between the two groups (P < 0.05). In the patient group, endoscopy showed congestion, edema, erosion and ulcers in 29 cases, hyperplasia and enlargement of lymphoid follicles in 10 cases with a maximal diameter of 7-8 mm, and 1 case showed normal endoscopy results. After treatment, 35 patients recovered from diarrhea, and terminal ileum lesions disappeared in 30 cases as determined by endoscopy. In the control group, endoscopy showed scattered hyperplasia of lymphoid follicles in 5 cases, and the follicles were small with the maximal diameter being 3 mm. There was no hyperemia, edema, erosion or ulcers.

CONCLUSIONSChronic diarrhea patients with normal colonoscopy findings may have lesions in the terminal ileum that can be detected by endoscopy; including hyperemia, erosion, ulcers and lymphoid follicle hyperplasia. Therapeutic effect is good with metronidazole and probiotics.

ABSTRACT

Dietary flavonoids show beneficial effects in the prevention of chronic diseases. However, flavonoid bioavailability is poor, probably due to their interaction with serum albumins. In the current work, the binding interactions of eight related flavonoids, sharing a similar core structure, with bovine serum albumin [BSA] were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. The binding affinities of the flavonoids with BSA were in the order hesperetin [KA=5.59 × 10[5]] > quercetin [4.94 × 10[5]] > naringenin [3.04 × 10[5]] > isoquercitrin [4.66 × 10[4]] > icariin [3.60 × 10[4]] > rutin [1.65 × 10[4]] > hesperidin [2.50 × 10[3]] > naringin [8.70 × 10[2]]. The associations of specific structural components of the flavonoids with their binding properties to BSA were also explored and hydrophobicity, functional group substituents, steric hindrance effects and the spatial arrangements of substituents seem to be the key factors for the affinities of flavonoids towards BSA. The results from the current work contribute to a better understanding of the transport of flavonoids in plasma and helping predict their physiological functions based on their intrinsic structures

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the effect of operative timing on clinical outcomes in elderly hip fracture. Methods Two hundred sixty-seven patients with hip fracture were treated from July 2006 to May 2008. The patients who had an operation within two days (the early surgery group) were compared with the outcome for those who had an operation more than two days (the later surgery group). Outcomes measured were mortality, post-operative complications, operative details, the comorbidity and the activities of daily living of patients. Results One hundred and sixteen patients were included in the study. There were 45 cases in the early surgery group, including 13 males and 32 females. The patients ranged from sixty-five to eightyeight years old, with an average age of 78.76 years. While there were 71 patients in the late surgery group, including 24 males and 47 females. The patients ranged from sixty-six to one hundred and three years old, with an average age of 80.00 years. The demographic data of patients show no significant difference in two groups. There was no difference in intraoperative conditions such as anesthesia, amount of bleeding, type of fixation between two groups. Patients in early surgery group experienced shorter length of hospital stay, and fewer pulmonary complications. The mortality of early surgery group do not show a significant increase at discharge, 6 month, 12 month postoperatively compared to that of the later surgery group. However patients in the early surgery group show a significant increase of ADL scores at discharge, 6 month postoperatively, but not at 12 month. Conclusion The timing of surgery has an impact on clinical outcome in elderly hip fracture. Early surgery was associated with improved function in the first 6 month postoperatively, but not 12months, but it was not associated with mortality.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the relationship between viral infection and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),and the effect of viral infections on the changes of Th1/Th2 in COPD patients. Methods The se-ra from 81 patients with acute exacerbations of COPD,25 patients with stable COPD and 22 healthy subjects were tested for specific IgM of respiratary syncytial virus(RSV) ,herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), parainfluenza vi-rus (PIV), adenovirus (ADV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Supernatant INF-γ and IL-4 cultured with PHA were determined. Results The positive rates of IgM in patients with acute exacerbations of COPD compared with those in patients with stable COPD and healthy subjects were significantly different(P <0.001 ). The level of INF-γ, and IL-4 in patients with acute exacerbations of COPD and stable COPD compared with normal control group;the level of INF-γ (242±43) and the of IL-4(42±9) in pa-tients with acute exacerbations of COPD was not significantly different as compared with the level of INF-γ( 198±32) and the level of IL-4(56±11 ) in patients with stable COPD (P<0.05), but the level of INF-γ was increased (90±18)and IL-4 was decreased (141±24) in control group (P<0.05). Compared with those in IgM negative group, the levels of INF-γ were significantly higher and the levels of IL-4 were significantly lowerIL-4 in lgM positive group( P<0.01 ). Conclusion Virus infection is a rather important factor in acute exacerbations of COPD, and COPD is characterized by a predominance of Th1-type response, and there is more significant Th1 response predomi-nance in COPD with virus infection.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore a reasonable treatment for intertrochanteric hip fractures in the aged patients by comparing the fixation effects of cannulated compression screws and intramedullary fixation nails. Methods From January 1998 to December 2004, in our department 123 old patients with intertrochanteric hip fracture were fixed with cannulated compression screws or intramedullary nails. They were followed up and their complete clinic data kept. According to the Evans classification, of the 51 patients who received treatment with cannulated compression screws for their anterograde intertrochanteric hip fracture, 14 were type Ⅰ , 24 type Ⅱ , 10 type Ⅲ and three type Ⅳ , while of the 72 patients who received treatment with intramedullary nailing, 10 were type Ⅰ , 12 type Ⅱ , 28 type Ⅲ , 14 type Ⅵ , and eight retrograde intertrochanteric hip fractures. A retrospective comparison was made between the old patients treated with the two different fixation devices in terms of operative time, blood loss, transfusion, average hospitalization time, intraoperative and postoperative complications, functional recovery one year postoperatively and treatment expenses. Results The differences between the two groups in operative time, blood loss, transfusion, treatment expenses were of statistical significance (P0.05). Conclusions Cannulated compression screws should be chosen for old patients with anterograde intertrochanteric hip fractures of Evans types Ⅰ & Ⅱ or of Evans types Ⅲ & Ⅳ who are at a high risk, in a poor health or severely osteoporotic state. For patients with unstable Evans types Ⅲ & Ⅳ or with retrograde intertrochanteric hip fractures, intramedullary nails are suitable.

ABSTRACT

Fraction F3-3-3 of glycosaminoglycan was isolated from the leftover bits of Bay scallop Argopecten irradiaus . Infrared spectra of F3-3-3 was similar to that of heparin. Agarose gel electrophoresis of this fraction was performed in the system of barbital buffer (0. 06 mol/L,pH 8. 6). It was found that F3-3-3 showed single band in the electrophoresis. Compared with the agarose gel electrophoresis of standard glycosaminoglycan, such as heparin, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin 6-sulfate, it indicated that the relative migration rate of the fraction was close to that of heparin.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the cause for complications of the long bone fractures treated with the interlocking nail and indicate the prevention and treatment measures. Methods From January 1998 to May 2000,168 patients with long bone fractures were treated with the interlocking nail. Of them, there were 77 cases of femoral fractures, 67 tibial fractures and 24 humeral fractures. Results All patients were followed up for 5-24 months. Complications occurred in 14 cases (8.33%) including 4 cases of infections, 1 lower limb necrosis, 2 internal fixation failure due to incorrect indication, 2 re-fractures during the operation, 2 distal screw misinserted,1 nail into the ankle joint, 1 distal screw broken and 1 distal screw loosening. Conclusions We should attach great importance to the following points during treatment of long bone fractures with interlocking nail:(1) The indications must be correctly handled. (2) The technique for interlocking nail must be performed strictly during operation; close inserting nail is proposed.(3) As for the comminuted fractures, bone continuity should be reconstructed and the time to start weight bearing properly delayed. (4) C-Arm X-ray supervision is necessary during operation.
